4Might take some getting used to.
By Mr. S. N. Cullinan
This is my first install of an alarm system. The cabling was run by electricians during a rewire. It needed twice as much cable as that supplied for a 3 bedroom house including a 20m run to a detached garage. In addition to the equipment that was supplied in this kit, i also bought 3 * menvier 12v smoke alarms and 2 dual-tech PIR's for the garage and one other space. I only use one of the door contacts, and use PIRs instead of the other 2. Although the main box only has 8 zones, you can wire more than one device into each zone - within contraints. Zones 7 and 8 can be configured as fire zones, which means they're effectively always armed. The panic button does not count as 1 of the 8 zones. In total i have 5 PIR's, 1 door contact and 3 smoke/fire detectors (2 are in the same zone) running off this system. The PIR's, even when set to 25kg have still been tripped by my small labrador. In the 3 months since installation I have had one false alarm from a PIR, which i'm currently putting down to the heating coming on at 6 and the sudden change in heat triggering the PIR.This is not for the faint hearted novice. I would estimate that it took me maybe 48 hours of work to get this thing up and running. But it was fun, if that's what pulls your chain, and your neighbours will hate you for a while. One complaint is that the two screws that hold the panel onto the the main control box should not be able to just fall out. I've lost three so far, and they're hard to replace. Bad design.

4Self Install Alarm - Accenta
By pocketpete
I had an existing alarm which was very old and rather useless. Indeed I got burgled and they smashed it to bit even though the bell was not working properly. I looked in to various models and eventually got the Honeywell system. My knowledge of alarms was nil but I had done a bit of electrics in the past and a little computer cabling. So I thought it would save me money. The box arrived and I had ordered the larger set with 6 x PIR's and a dummy alarm box. I decided to lay this out on the kitchen table and wired it all together before putting it all on the walls and in the loft. The instructions are very technical and pretty useless. The only clear section being the bell housing which actually had the wires clearly marked. The PIR's were a nightmare 6 wires but 8 available slots. A search on the internet revealed EOL EDL were not used. Eventually I managed to get one PIR working but adding a second proved difficult. The LED panel kept showing TAMPER fault despite me checking all cables and switches.I phoned the supplier who did not really want to help but eventually a helpful guy told me the LED panels suffered a common fault that the tamper switch spring got squashed when in storage and to simply pull out the spring to extend it and the fault would go. I did this and instantly the Panel worked and so did the PIR. Another phone called simplified the linking of the PIR units and I installed it around the house.Every thing worked well but the bell tamper switch proved unreliable as the brick I had mounted it on was not level. I move it 3 inches and all was well. Once you figure out the wires for the PIR it all seems so simple. I put a Magnetic switch on the entry door simply two wires on them. Watch the tamper circuits they can be troublesome and hard to find which circuit is to blame for the fault. Even the walk through test failed to show which PIR I had wired wrongly. Not a bad system overall. Programming the box afterwards was easy once your had figured out the manual. I just wish the manual was better written it would have made life so much better, it assumed you knew a lot about alarms. It took me two days to get it installed and working well. If I did it again it would take only a couple of hours.

4Burglars beware!
By Miss L Johnson
The kit contains sufficient equipment to more than adequately alarm a 3 bed semi and you can always add to it if you feel the need.Installation is easy enough if you are a confident DIYer but took a few hours over a few days - mainly routing cables. A bit nervous on first power up but it worked fine. The instructions are aimed more at the professional than DIYer. Don't expect the door switches to fit your doors - you will have to shape one or the other. Look online for tips.Once installed and programmed, easy to operate.
