Metz 15 ring flash
By pfo
I was quite pleased with this purchase. Bought from one amazon-partner in Germany, it arrived promptly and in excellent conditions. The ring flash works excellent on lenses which do not extend when focusing. If the lens extends, the ring adds weight to the end of the lens and can make it hard to focus. The instruction manual looks huge (as it comes in many languages), but the instructions are clear and precise. Using it adds a new dimension to macro-photography, and possibly to portrait photography as well. For the fraction of the price of the Canon ring flash, you get a flash made by one of the most reliable flash makers in the world. It is also possible to change the balance of the two flashes (left/right) to mimic different lighting conditions.I truly recommend it. Just be aware that the maximum lens aperture size to fit is 72mm. If your lens' filter size is larger, look for another solution.

Metz MS1 marvel
By M. Worthington
I was looking for some kind of macro ring flash adaptor. Having looked at the web and spotted a couple of ring adaptors that attach to an ordinary bounce head flash (which I thought looked a little cumbersome) I came across the Metz 15. After much umming and arring (not because I'm a pirate but because NOBODY actually stocked this thing so I could look at it!)I took the plunge. It was to work with an Olympus E30 and a variety of lenses, including the Sigma 105mm macro. The Metz couples seamlessly with the Olympus remote flash facilities, including any aperture settings and exposure compensation. The results are very good indeed. OK, so it's not as soft as a full ring flash but the lighting is very even and consistant. You can alter the power to bias either flash to create directional lighting and the modelling of the two flashes. I tried it with a bridge camera using the (pre flash learning) slave facility and that worked OK but you can't get too close. The Metz even has a PC sync connection and it's own illumination lamp to aid focus. One problem with the Sigma lens though is that the lens barrel extends when focusing close but with the added weight of the flash it will not retract when pointing slightly down, so manual focusing is the only way (I might have a dicky lens I suppose but no way of checking). I will also be using it with a Nikon D90 and Nikkor 85mm micro lens which focusses internally and again works seamlessly with the remote flash (because of course the MS 1 works with all the brands, fantastic!). A note to Canon users, you can't use the built-in flash as the remote commander for TTL, unless you have a 7D, so you might be restricted to slave use, everybody else is fine, HURRAY!All in all a very worthy purchase, highly recommended.

Easier than it looks
By Iveljay
If you are thinking of buying this check its dimensions as it may be bigger than you think. That apart it works very well once you have set it up, it is a general purpose flash, useable on most systems - mine is running wirelessly on Olympus. There is a warning to use it on internally focussing lenses or use manual focussing, this is to prevent straining the motor on lenses with long extension like the Sigma 105. I focus this lens manually anyway so isn't a problem. The ability to vary lighting bias from one side or the other to provide modelling it also useful. One final tip for beginners start shooting on aperture priority at f16 as relying on the Programme setting will almost certainly overexpose.
