This player might be described as having good, bad and ugly characteristics. It has the appearance and shape of the original brick iPod with a clunky wheel on the front which doesn't actually work as a wheel and a large handle on the back. It will undoubtedly reduce the chances of theft as no teenager would be seen dead with something that looks out of the Ark. The upsides are that you needn't take any charging cables and it has an internal speaker when you want to listen without headphones - as a regular traveller these were genuine upsides even though the speaker sound isn't great. It plays FM radio, can record radio and external sound, plays video and music, view photoes, has a small torch and can charge up your mobile phone. You can also add files from any other computer as the player is recognised as an external hard drive so if you're travelling for a long time that will be a plus. You can plug and play SD cards up to 16gb. It doesn't sync through iTunes so you need to drag and drop from Windows Media or Windows Explorer though I have managed to drag tracks from iTunes. The internal memory isn't big at 4gb and your files remain separate between internal and external sources. The process of finding tracks is clunky and while you can add tracks to a favourites folder it seems impossible at the present time to create playlists. A recent firmware has stopped some of the issues mentioned on other reviews on the web. Not all SD cards are recognised and some work only occasionally. If you stop a video on restart the video goes back to the beginning. The radio is excellent and the headphone sound is good - in fact I would say the sound quality is better than other MP3 players on the market. The company states a minute windup will produce 45 sound. Not exactly correct - more c. 20 mins and your mobile can't be fully charged from winding up. The screen is small, is easily scratched but has a reasonable quality. So, all in this is not really an alternative to an iPod in memory, coolness, speed of file changes and size. It's good if you are planning a long trip and the notion of a windup sounds useful. You're less likely to lose it, inadertently put it in the washing machine and potentially have it stolen - it's not shiny and cool enough. It's good for business travellers who have to sit at airports for long periods of time and want to hear some music in their hotel room. It's not an iPod and shouldn't be compared as such even though it's the obvious comparator. I bought one for my daughter who is travelling for a year but it wouldn't work properly and the company didn't respond to email. Eventually I gave her my iPod and I have now received the Revolution back and it's fully working. I'll use it when travelling but I think there will be lots of occasions I shall miss my iPod even though there are distinct benefits of the Revolution. Guess I am trying to like it. There are no nice third party gadgets but then that's the point of the Revolution - it's stand alone.Update: been playing with it for a few weeks and I can see now how to create 'playlists' (create a folder, name it the playlist you wish and then drop all albums manually). The more I use it the more I am inclined to feel positive about it. It's not as intuitive as the iPod but the various upsides such as windup, internal speaker, external memory, torch etc all lead to a very nice large black plastic lump of kit which will be very handy though is easily scratched. It has an infuriating habit of losing all your music, photo and video files requiring you to reformat and put all the files back or refusing to turn on if you have added a file it doesn't recognise which again requires a reformat. I have backed up all the files and folders on to an external hard drive which then allows me to easily drop everything back on again after the reformat. Alternatively store everything on an SD card. This is simple enough but I don't remember the last time needing to do this for my old iPod. I have also increased the volume of all the music files so this allows a better sound quality from the speaker - at a standard volume even maximum the sound can be thin. However the sound is now good enough for me to find it enjoyable to have around.One last update!: I now use the Revolution exclusively when travelling and leave it in the bag along with laptop travel charger, wireless mouse and the usual stuff that costs more for being small and light so packing is a minimum. It holds a 16gb SD card that contains plenty of playlists, some films and talking books. If it runs out of juice then handwind it up and away you go. It plays sound through a tiny Veho360 single speaker in my hotel room which never appears to run down either. I've left it on trains, on a plane and in a few hotel rooms and always get it back as nobody would want it and it's easy to describe to lost property. It seems indestructible (it has survived a few drops as well, never goes wrong and the sound quality is excellent. It's clunkiness is an idiosyncratic feature and the looks given by other travellors is akin to the same given to someone using a CD Walkman. That makes me like it all the more. Works great as a radio and as a torch at night. It has also outlasted the iPod I bought to replace it some years ago so its a shame though understandable this player didn't break through to the big time. Long may it last so thankyou Mr Baylis!

It does all this for under £100If you want to spend loads of money looking cool then get something else.But if you don't like being ripped off by some companies for the sake of fashion...

i brought one of these in oct last year the sound quality is good there was an issue with the memory card there is a firmware update on the website they also have good technical support and dealt with any issues with the player
