5You get what you pay for -- quality
By Neil McKechnie
I still have my yellow closed-cell foam Karrimat, which I bought in about 1977, and it is still as good as ever. But it is so thin at 10mm that it doesn't give much added comfort. So I decided to indulge myself and buy a self-inflating mat, when I saw one on offer in Mountain Warehouse. It was £25 for a light-weight tapered mat, just like the one here. So I bought one (how could I go wrong). However, on the second outing, a blister appeared on the top side of the mat, where the outer skin had de-laminated from the inner foam. The blister got larger and so I took the mat back and got a replacement. The second one did the same (but to a smaller degree as I didn't even get to lie on it), so I got my money back and bought a proper mat, i.e. the Thermarest.I have had the Prolite (regular size) for about a year now and have used it for all of my outings. It is light (about 460g) and packs small (compared to most mats anyway) and I haven't had any of the dreaded blisters or any leaks. Whilst there are thicker and warmer mats, I have no complaints about it whatsover and it compares favourably with other 2.5cm mats, and it is probably the best one for its weight, pack size and price. The diamond cut foam reduces the weight (in effect, the foam has large holes cut in it). It comes with a spacious stuff sack, but no repair kit (this can be bought extra, although I haven't needed to use it yet) and no strap (I use some velcro strap from a gardening shop). Remember, as with all self-inflating mats, to store it inflated with the valve open (I fold it into three and put it in the top of the wardrobe).I have recently bought a Multimat mattress, which is about half the price, but thicker and heavier at 890g, and will be used by my wife (who won't be carrying it far). I don't yet know whether the Multimat is warmer -- it should be as it's rated a 4-5 seasons -- but I prefer the Thermarest Prolite to carry in a rucksack.Note: I've also used the Prolite in a double-skin hammock (between the skins) and it worked fine there, although somewhat curved, keeping my bottom surfaces insulated.

5Rolls even smaller than the last one I had

Can't beat this for comfort whilst still being small and light-weight. Best used inside the sleeping bag so you can't slip off it

4Teeny weenie but comfortable
By D. Finkenzeller
I bought this for the 2010 Dartmoor Mountain Marathon; I was impressed by the size (inflated and rolled) and it weighs very little. It could inflate faster; I ended up blowing it up to overcome the mats reluctance to fully inflate - but don't overdo it. You can spend more and buy lighter, but for me this was the ideal compromise between size, price and weight. I slept well apart from needing to squeeze past my tent partner for numerous loo trips and woke up feeling refreshed. I also go camping with my family and will probably use this on those trips in favour of the over-large double airbeds we normally take. My wife and kids can use them and I'll have peace and quiet on my single mat :)
