best tube amp modeller, more natural sounding than Line 6
By SkinChanger2
pros:More authentic and organic tones than the Line 6 unitsexcellent build quality (roadworthy)compactvery good value for moneywide range of quality, realistic tube soundsquality effects and preampsblues and crunch sounds are surprisingly dynamicdoubles up as an ASIO soundcard with your PC. With the Tonelab, you can record in a DAW with no latency, and that's a lot as it eliminates the annoying problem of audio latency in a PC.What's more, the more I get to know the Tonelab, the more I realize what a great and sophisticated machine this is,you get essentially a reconfigurable, miniature tube amp in a box. I have read many ridiculous questions on the internet, such as 'does the tube really does anything in the Tonelab'? Yes it does. Not only that, it does a lot more than you imagine,as this pedalboard uses a tube in a POWER AMP complete with transformer and attenuator, and the reason is because you getthe best tube tones only by cranking up a tube amp at high volume. The Tonelab does this in a 'miniature world' format andadds amp modelling and effects. Think about it, that's a lot for something that appears like 'a conventional pedalboard with a tube'.The thing is, no other pedalboard offers what the Tonelab does, because other pedalboards by Zoom etc put a tube in the PREAMP section, and a tube PREAMP does not give the dynamics and depth of a cranked up tube POWER AMP. To understand all this you need to know that a tube amp has a tube preamp and a tube power amp. Angus Young gets his tone by turning up his Marshall amp. If he were to play with volume at 1 watt, the tube power amp does not get overdriven. That happens only when the amp is turned fully up, which is impossible at home because of too much volume. The Tonelab allows you to crank up a tube power amp and to keep the volume down because it essentially has an attenuator built in.Like I wrote before, the Tonelab offers what no other pedalboard offers, especially at this price, and not even at higher prices.Cons:noise reductor is only passable, and not nearly as good as on my Ibanez TK999 pedalI wish the Tonelab had a tube preamp too, beside the tube power amp (which is great). Yet, you still get authentic tube tone, no simulation here. The simulation is of different amp models, not of tube distortion. That makes quite a difference, compared to ,for example, the Line 6 POD, which emulates amp models, but also tube distortion. The Tonelab does not emulate the latter, it gives you the real thing. Conclusion: not perfect, but still the BEST amp modeller out there, in my opinion far more organic and natural sounding than Line 6, and especially better than Guitar Rig and Amplitube and I am a tube amp maniac so I know what sounds good and what doesn't.I have gigged with nothing but the Tonelab ST and a crap (but very portable) transistor amp, and the results surprised me, always nice tone with minimum of equipment and fuss. Totally recommended buy, the Tonelab beats everything else that you might think is similar.

Absolutely fabulous
By FreeKamil
I gave 5 stars for a reason. I have never used anything, what gave me such a fantastic sustain and vintage feel. You can shape your sound as much as you want and get the best of your guitar every time! If you want to buy a guitar multi effect, just go to the music store and try this one. I have heard that the new version doesn't sound as good as this one, but have a go with the new one anyway.. New version is bigger and have more effects on it as well as visual tuner and speakers for practice? Crazy. Let me tell you more about this version. I have been playing on many amps and guitar effects, and I am telling you that. Try to connect this Vox Tonelab ST to the amp in the effects loop. If you can switch the preamp in your amp off and use this instead - you will be amazed. Best buy ever.

Nice unit, but bad service
By J. Robson
I'm a long time fan of Vox Tonelab preamps. I've used one for years & it's the bee's knees as far as authentic "real" sounding amp simulations are concerned. However, I bought this unit (a replacement for my old one, which after many years faithful service has developed some reliability issues - crackly pots etc.) on Amazon from LOOKAT & it was supplied with the wrong AC adaptor. A small point admittedly, but the hassle of getting the correct one cost me time, effort & money. I will not be ordering anything else again if LOOKAT are the supplier.
