I decided to purchase the Yamaha A-S 700 Amplifier after reading an unfavourable review of it in What HiFi!! It only got 3 Stars!! The cheaper A-S 500 however got 5 Stars!! I do not like Loud, Strident,in your face amplifiers which almost throw the Music at you in shovelfuls - rather like throwing coal into the Flying Scotsman's firebox!! I like Classical Music and Jazz, and prefer a warm, rich, and mellifluous sound which is soothing and unfatiguing. My previous Amplifier was a NAD - a C725BEE Stereo Receiver, and on occasions it scared the hell out of me with the force of the sound. I bought it on the basis of rave reviews!! I have lived with it for a year and now it is time for it to go for good! The Yamaha arrived this morning the day after I ordered it - how's that for service!! That is why I keep coming back to good old Amazon!! The Yamaha A-S 700 is very different to the NAD in its presentation. The listener is wrapped in and cossetted by the Music. I have never heard Brahm's variations on the St. Anthony Chorale sound so Wonderful. This is the Amplifier I have been waiting for all these years, and now I have got it!! It looks understated, and is superbly built. The standard of fit and finish is very polished. It is the only Amplifier I have ever owned that does not emit a faint hum from its transformer when powered on in standby. The NAD hummed quite noticeably in standby, as did my previous Sony, and the Marantz before that. The Yamaha on the other hand offers you the sound of silence from its Transformer - bliss at last!! I love the Yamaha A-S700, and look forward to many happy relaxing hours listening to my music through it. The rest of my system consists of a Sony DAB Tuner, a Sony SACD Player, a Sony Twin Cassette Deck, Monitor Audio BR6 Floorstanding speakers ( Wonderful ) and a REL T1 Subwoofer connected to the Amp via the Neutrik Speakon high level connector. The REL is quite simply astonishing. My next purchase will be the Yamaha A700 CD Player to replace the 5 year old Sony.The Yamaha A-S 700 is most definitely rated at 5 stars by me, but I can appreciate that others may crave the presentation of more forceful amplifiers like the NAD. Met all my expectations. I particularly like the variable loudness control which helps retain a full tonal range at any volume level. A Good price at Amazon with prompt delivery.

Well up to standard of Yamaha. Superb engineering and simple looks. Performance in line with cost and expectations as a long term Yamaha user of nearly 20 years. "Direct Connect" facility is perfect for my requirements of a "no fuss" sound.
