Nice solid watch
By D. Wight
I'm no pocket watch buff, but I've owned and used a variety of decent wrist-watches in the past - Longines, Omega, Hanhart, Sinn, Oris - so I've got a bit of an idea maybe.I've found it increasingly hard to tolerate a watch on my wrist and I have to take it off for work and wash my hands a lot anyway, so I decided to have a go at a pocket watch and this is my first. The box is made of wood and very nice and has an expensive feel to it but the baize lining is based on rather flimsy plastic - who cares it's in the drawer anyway. The watch winds a long way for the first time and comes up fully wound without much of a gradual increase in tension. I haven't let it run down yet so I don't know how long it will run but I reckon a couple of days. I've been keeping mine about half wound with about 20 'winds' in the evening and it is gaining about 20 seconds a day at most. Every other evening I've been setting it a bit behind. The seconds don't stop when you pull out the winder so I just set it for the nearest minute behind time (somewhere between 30-60 seconds slow) and it's been pretty close to on time most of the next couple of days. Now that mught sound like a pain in the backside but actually it is curiously liberating having a watch that's about right and is nice to tinker with - it changes your relationship with time in a weird kind of nice way. I'm not wasting time thinking about how accurate my watch is because it isn't and I don't care because it's got a really nice feel and look to it!The shiny silver plating is very nice, the face is beautifully done and nice and tasteful. The hands are parallel to the face if you know what I mean - they don't bend or curve up or down. The face is very easy to read even in twilight. The face is very unpretentious. The seconds move nicely and although the seconds dial looks small it is clear and easy to read. The roman numerals are clean and clear. It does tick by the bedside at night of course, but it isn't especially loud or obtrusive. The Tick is a simple tick tick - tick tick whereas expensive accurate watches like my omega are much more rapid da da da da - da da da daI keep mine in my trouser pocket on a soft lanyard attached to a belt loop because I suspect a chain might scratch it. I've designed my own simple black nylon cord lanyard which works really well with a larks-head hitch at the top of the watch and at the belt loop.I don't miss a wrist-watch at-all... I love this smooth clear clean understated watch - it slips into your hand and out of your pocket and back just like that - Fab
