ProTrack Recorder
By j.heywood@btinternet.com
I found this a little disappointing, because I need to download/purchase some addtional software for my iPod Touch. However, the device did work although it is very sensitive to handling noise. Buy a tripod to use it. Once I was used to it, it worked perfectly and I am very pleased with it. It adds some useful functionality to my iPod Touch.I do recommend it, but be aware of the handling issues. It works nicely with phantom powered mics.

Superb sound recording in a portable package
By Stephen
Before getting this item I recorded audio using two simple dynamic microphones plugged into a preamp then into the line in of the sound card on our desktop computer. The sound quality achieved was very satisfactory with two caveats 1. you had to turn off the external hard drives or the noise they generated ended up on the recording 2. you could not record away from the computer.I looked at purchasing a laptop to enable portability - but instead went for the Alesis Protrack and am very happy with the result.I record to an ipod nano (3rd generation - the square one) and the sound from the built in condenser microphones is as good as anything I ever recorded before, and is now in a hand sized package. I had contemplated using an external microphone, but have not bothered yet. Have recorded both spoken words and city ambiance including church bells with the built in microphones with very pleasing results.Few pointers - when using the internal microphones the noise of your fingers on the controls is recorded, so set the level then hold it still and do not touch it. Secondly in the instructions it says explicitly that rechargeable batteries should not be used in this unit.Very happy with this purchase - This package is cheaper than a laptop, smaller, and cable free when using the internal microphones.

Elastic Band and Wi-Fi needed
By Mr. Peter F. K. Feldon
This is a good product, but Alesis have not updated it for the ipod touch. The promo photos show the ipod touch having a protective case (called a sled), but it doesn't ship with this included, and the box and instructions make no reference to the ipod touch. It works fine but you need an elastic band to hold your ipod touch in place. Many companies are reproducing the Alesis photo showing this sled. I bought mine from Advanced mp3players who have declined to honour the implication of the photo that this sled is provided. I could have sent it back, but I expect all other companies will take the same line. Basically Alesis and the suppliers can afford to be lazy because there isn't much competion.I am using the BIAS ipro app which is good, but you must have wi-fi to be be able to upload your recordings. I tried to upload direct to their website from the ipod, but I couldn't get this to work and got no response from BIAS.
