Wish I had bought these sooner!
By S. Walsingham
I have had these boots a couple of days, but my wife is fed up of hearing how comfortable they are.As a courier, I do lots of walking about and up and down stairs etc, and with business picking up this year my legs and feet have been feeling the strain. I usually get to the weekend and my feet physically hurt because I have been wearing trainer-like work shoes which aren`t meant for walking a few miles a day. This is the first weekend in months that my feet don`t hurt. These boots didn`t need any breaking in, and really are too good for work shoes, so I intend buying another pair .Most of the walking I do is around city centre addresses, so it just remains to be seen how long the soles last.

Good Via Ferrata shoe.
By Onbellyman
I was looking for a shoe with particular qualities to cope with the specific needs of Via Ferrata climbing. These Hi-Tec Fasthike II Low shoes fulfilled those needs and passed the test with flying colours. After using them for 5 weeks walking around at home (general day wear on pavements, roads, etc) plus some training walks in the hills (wet grass, rough tracks) I used them for a week at Riva-Del-Garda doing the local Via Ferrata. My two sons and myself all bought these shoes and found them comfortable "straight out of the box". No blisters or sore/pressure points from any of us and the fitting suited my fairly wide feet well (although I appreciate it's difficult to be sure when buying by mail). They are light and comfortable in hot weather. Easy to lace up securely using a simple overhand knot after the last/top eyelets then around the top hooks and finish with a bow. These top hooks, by-the-way, are well designed so they don't bend and are kept close in to the side of the shoe so they won't catch in ladder rungs and wires. The eyelets seemed to have quite sharp edges on the inside (where the lace runs against it) so I took the precaution of smoothing them using a very small rat-tail file. I didn't file my sons shoes though and, having just examined the laces on all three pairs, can see no signs of wear on any of the laces (shredding of laces was reported in another review here) so maybe I was being over-cautious.They have quite a rigid sole (giving more comfort when standing on narrow ladder rungs) with a narrow welt that helps when "edging" on footholds. The deep, sharply-cut tread pattern can get clogged with sheep muck but on the rock-strewn paths in Italy they were ideal, providing grip on soil, rock and root. There is also a single deep "V" moulded into the tread between the sole and the heel. This provides useful grip when standing on a rung or root using the mid-section of the shoe.I am happy to report that the rubber compound used for the sole also provided excellent friction on the very smooth and shiny footholds found on the 5C route at Monte Albano. I can't say how good the grip is on this type of rock in the wet because I haven't tried climbing with them in the rain yet. However, I have used them walking through wet grass and they do seem to keep the wet out.
