This is an essential update for all those people involved in graphics / image manipulation.I love the new 'panels' adjustment system, the improved dodge & burn tools, but especially the new content aware scaling - now fully incorporated into CS4. It is absolutely awesome : I would have upgraded from CS2 for this alone. But, as the others have posted here, there are so many other fantastic changes & additions to the programme that it would be churlish to bulk at the price - which to my mind is just about right.

CS4 improves significantly over CS3 w.r.t. ease of using adjustment layers, and for enhancements to Photoshop RAW. The CS4 upgrade package includes a video, "Learning CS4," which explains and illustrates, not only the new features, but techniques for extracting pictures with good dynamic range and vibrance. There seems to be little that is particularly new about the adjustment layers capability, but they are now each accessible with such ease that the process of combining layer effects is both quicker and more effective. CS4 is able to address a greater range of RAW formats than CS3, and has an enhanced, auto-masking "Adjustment Brush" feature which enables really neat adjustments to localized areas within a picture. Overall, CS4 is worth the upgrade cost, and in some cases is necessary to address the latest versions of RAW, e.g. from Canon 5D MkII.

Over the past 6 years as a Beta Tester for Adobe I have seen their products steadily improve. CS4 is no exception. The vastly improved Bridge together with a 'non-destructive' Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) modules make this application a snip to run letting me spend less time in front of the Mac and more time behind my lens. Closer integration with Adobe Lightroom makes the 'round trip' from one to the other effortless AND updates are real-time. My only real gripe is pricing. Adobe does not offer a level playing field on price offering Dollars for Pounds across the Atlantic. That said, Amazon's pricing is pretty keen and postage is FREE if you want it - unlike Adobe.
