5Sony A900 Vertical grip
By TRA
This is an excellent accessory for the Sony A900, though the asking price from some vendors is very high.It weighs much less than I expected and will run on the battery that you will have taken out of the camera in order to fit the grip, or it can take two batteries, in which case the camera will display both batteries on the rear information screen and will display the percentage left of the battery with less power remaining in the rear and top screens. It will then use the battery with less power and when that one is exhausted it will automatically switch over to the other battery. It is extremely comfortable and intuitive to use, with all the main buttons in the same place as on the camera body, so you won't have to look for them - your fingers will automatically go to the right place. Only the buttons to the left of the screen (replay, erase, etc) (and the top plate and front buttons) are not repeated on the grip.It also has sockets for a strap or grip hand strap, although some reviews claim that the Sony hand strap is not comfortable. It has a tripod socket on the long side of the grip. Sony have missed a trick here: if you're using the camera for vertical images, many tripods would cope better with a tripod socket on the new "base" of the camera, i.e., the side.On my A900 I have switched the functions of the two control dials, as it seems to me logical that the front dial should operate the lens aperture, being closer to the lens, and that the rear dial should operate the shutter speed, similar to on film cameras. I am impressed that when the grip is fitted it picks up the settings that I have chosen and operates in exactly the same way.It is of course necessary to consider what camera bag might be suitable if you plan to add the grip, but for vertical shots this eliminates the wrist strain that results from turning the camera on its side, provides a much stronger and safer hold and makes operation of the controls easier. Having this grip could prevent you from dropping the camera!Recommended, but do some research to find the best price. In particular, Amazon's "New and used from ..." price varies over time, depending on the items offered in Amazon Marketplace.

4Quality grip, but you do pay for it.

I do a lot of motorsport photography and this requires the use of continuous autofocus and burst shooting quite often. This means you use a lot of battery power quite quickly so I brought this battery grip for my Alpha 850 to extend the endurance between battery changes.First thing to notice when you unbox it is this grip is made of the same material as the main Alpha 850/900 body, alloy with a plastic and rubber coating. This would probably account for the fact that it is expensive as grips for the lesser models tend to be just plastic and rubber. The other thing that is evident is the quality of the controls and buttons is high, the same as the main body so the grip does not feel like a cheap and obvious add on. There are almost all of the buttons replicated on the grip and you can turn them off if you do not need them but the main camera controls still work. I suspect the buttons may also be weather proof like on the main body as it would make sense. When in use as a vertical grip I find it really helps you to hold the camera properly and it feels like the main grip. The grip contains a tray in which the two batteries sit (not supplied), but you can run it just fine with only one battery in the tray if you wish. The battery status indicator works as normal and there are no detection issues I have seen as can happen on the cheap third party grips. When considering purchasing this grip there are three considerations: The price, the weight, the size. The price is quite high as I said and you have to be sure you are going to use it for the money as you could put the money towards a good lens, the fact that it comes with no batteries also doesn't help. The weight of the body does increase considerably with two batteries fitted and the standard Sony neck strap is not padded enough to be comfortable so you will need to consider replacing it. I bought the Sony leather strap which is better but a Neoprene quick release strap would be a good idea. The last consideration is the size of the body. Will your existing bag dividers be able to be reconfigured to allow this larger body to fit or will you need to buy a new bag? This is a good quality grip and worth buying if you need more battery power between changes or a nice firm portrait orientation grip, the price is all that prevents five stars from me.
