3The Best of a Flawed Bunch - for me at least
By Maximus
Like most people I've spent the majority of my life using an electric kettle, but when we switched to a gas cooker I decided on a change. Making a cuppa is something of a ritual activity for us Brits, and I've discovered that this stove top kettle adds greatly to my enjoyment of it. Somehow the timeless simplicity of boiling water over a flame gives me greater satisfaction than listening to the roar of an electric gadget. On a practical side it will also save me money, for although expensive this kettle will surely outlast me, whereas I've already spent more to date on the failed electric elements and cracked plastic bodies of its inferior predecessors. As the saying goes, buy cheap, buy twice.I spent a long time investigating the various stove top kettles on the market and the options available to me. The cast iron ones I rejected because of their massive weight and tendency to suffer pitting and corrosion over time. Although cheaper and positively featherweight by comparison, aluminium was out because of inferior heat conduction and a desire on my part to avoid dementia. Antique copper kettles are surprisingly reasonable in price but whilst the exterior looks magnificent if kept polished, a copper interior is too dangerous in my book. Moisture and air combined with copper creates verdigris, the green stuff that's highly toxic. I just didn't want the high maintenance and constant risk. So that left - stainless steel, the ideal answer.Stainless Alessi kettles are either elegant or kitsch, depending on your viewpoint, but around twenty to thirty pounds more expensive than this Aga model for the cheaper ones. And the classic but tiny Richard Sapper design icon is expensive enough to have been crafted from solid unobtainium! So, with my desire for quality coupled with a need for relative thrift I opted for this polished stainless Aga kettle. It also comes in an enamelled version but that will just chip over time whereas mine will not.On a practical side this kettle drops a couple of stars on ergonomic grounds. Firstly, the whistle is a bit screechy and a touch too sensitive. It begins to sound fifteen seconds or so before a rolling boil has got going. And with the thick metal base the kettle will continue to boil on enough to prolong the whistle for some time after the gas has been switched off. It encourages the user to ditch the push-in cap completely, and thus lose it. Be aware also that the spout is very narrow. Unless you own a plumbed-in water filter with a separate tap (which are always very slender) you will need to remove the lid every time you wish to fill it. Had I not owned such a filter I would not have purchased this kettle because the lid is tight and a faff to prise off.In summary, this kettle is not ideal. A hinged lid, wider spout and more mellow, less sensitive whistle would all go to improve it. But on the plus side it's reasonably priced for what it is, will last a lifetime, and is okay if you own a water filter...Unfortunately my research unearthed nothing on the market currently that was perfect in both form and function. This particular kettle simply has the right mix of compromises to suit my own needs. Even with those compromises I greatly prefer it to the electric option. And if THE perfect design is introduced, I'll come back and let you know.

5Perfect Kettle for gas and electric cookers
By Steve
Great practical design. Hope it lasts as long as last Aga kettle which lasted for 27 useful years. Perferred the previous models push on whistle rather than a push in one - you are always worrying about straining the springs.
