5Best available HD camcorder
By Y. Cheung
I have not had a camcorder for about 10 year. Before I bought the Sony CX11E, I have been very careful to choose the right one. There are a few criteria for me before I bought this one.To me, the camcorder must be (i) true 1080i high def (ii) over 10x zoom (iii) decent picture (iv) optical stabilizer (v) ultra compact size (vi) build quality (vii) latest technologies. Based on my research I have shortlisted Canon HF10, Panasonic HS100, Samsung H104, Sony TG3, Aiptek AHD300, Sanyo Xacti HD1000, and a Flip Mino HD model too.Other than researching on the web, I have also played with most of these models in different shops. In the end Sony CX11E stood out (i) its superb build quality (ii) excellent video quality (iii) excellent point & shoot picture quality almost as good as a dedicated still camera (although in the end I've also bought a still camera - I'll explain below) (iv) a very decent manual controlMost camcorders perform well in daylight but some of them failed in low light condition. CX11E has an all rounded performance, capturing stable video evening even at low light environment. Its build quality is the best. (Samsung and Sanyo are surprisingly very disappointing.) CX11E also has a very powerful manual control menu. You can switch to an easy mode if you find the manual controls too complicated. The adjustable knob in front allows you to do some professional stuff. For example you can use it to adjust the focus, e.g. from the background to the main character. It is unique to all models that I have looked at. Another great thing about CX11E is that you can attach add-on lens such as 2.5x zoom lens, wide angle lens, and other filters easily. These lens are available at a very reasonable price.CX11E is not perfect however. Although it allows you to take pictures while shooting, the quality of the pictures are not so good. It has too much noise, regardless of the light resources. The manual control for taking still pictures is a bit 'arbitrary'. It doesn't give the user a set of values like a still camera would have provide. Sony use an adjustable bar without any value. So instead of adjusting the aperture value to a 7 or 11, you do it by adjusting it closer to the right or left or in the middle. It is a bit strange but I can somehow see the funny side of it - because all these numbers on a still camera are only labels and they are not mathematical comparison anyway. Coming back to this camera, the optical stabilizer seems to be disabled by itself whenever an additional lens is attached to the camcorder. I'm however not 100% sure if it really is the case.Overall, I have a very good user experience in this camcorder. Everything seems to be just working fine. After six months, I am still very happy with it.

4Superb Camera, Outstanding Quality
By J. Lawson
Firstly the quality of this camera compared to my previous mini-DV and High 8 cameras completely blew me away - before I realised I was shooting in medium HD mode (there are two even higher quality settings!).It has a great balance between sheer ease of use and if you want it, the amount of manual control for focusing, exposure, white balance etc is also very decent. My only negative comment will be to say I think any camera with a touch-screen should come with a pen/pointer like Palm Pockets or PDA's do. As this camera doesn't have a traditional viewfinder you will be relying on your screen for any delicate focussing.Compatibility and ease of use regarding the supplied software on Windows XP is really superb and easy to get to grips with. Also it is very easy to convert video files to WMV or MPEG if you require.I doubt there is a better camera out there for this price.

5brilliant camcorder
By alex
This is a brilliant camera, easy to use, touch screen controls and menus which are easy to use. I charged it straight out of the box and 2 hours later it was fully charged and ready to shoot. the night shot seems a bit weak, and can only focus short distances, so if you want to do 'most haunted' style shots of your face, it works great, if you want to film a hedgehog in your garden though, you have no hope from a distance, as the infra-red 'light' doesn't illuminate far and the camera just records a fuzzy blur.there are a whole load of options for which quality you want to record in, so you can choose to record in the best quality possible, or elongate the life of your memory card by shooting in a lower quality. I've yet to hook it up to the tv to compare the differences in picture quality, but i think for most purposes a 'medium' quality will be more than sufficient.the big difference of this camera from previous offerings is the 10.2 megapixel sensor, which also means you can get decent megapixel photos. just as a warning though, when filming you CAN capture stills, but the maximum resolution is 7.6 megapixels whilst filming. again i haven't put these on the 'large screen' to compare quality, but looking at them through the lcd, they looked pretty grainy to me, more so than i'd expect if i were using a 7.6 megapixel camera. I was shooting at night using standard lighting though, which may have contributed to the 'noise'. when not filming it can take 10.2 megapixel pics, which seem great.the only problem i have a real issue with is the memory stick compatibility, i bought an 8gb card so i have more recording capacity, and it, and another 8gb i own both come up with 'this memory stick may not be able to play or record images correctly' error message. I don't know whether that is because they are 8gb, or whether it is because they are not "mark 2" like the 4gb card that came supplied with the camera. I'm guessing mark 2 means faster data access? anyway, the 8gb cards DO work, but most of the time the screen is taken up with the error message (before you record, when you start to record, when you stop, when you bring up a menu, so it makes using the camera with an 8gb card VERY irritating! unfortunarely i do not have an 8gb mark 2 card to find out whether it is the size or the version that causes the problem. Having just read on a forum, it might be that the xards are not genuine Sony cards... which is very worrying as i bought off of marketplace! so may SURE it is genuine! if i had a working 8gb stick i'd give it 5 stars
