I have both the Kenwood Major and the KitchenAid K5 for a long time now. The KitchenAid only looks better (Retro), but in many ways the machine is not as good as the Kenwood Major. Kenwood Major is more stable, easier to clean, in my opinion an higher safety level concerning the electric wiring; and many easy applications. But it seems Kenwood is downgrading its quality by selling hard plastic tools who crack after some weeks use: do not buy the fruit press attachmentAT644B or the Kenwood - AT502 New Batteur Souple pour Robot Major. Back to Kitchenaid K5: the ice-maker-bowl is very expensive and waste of money.

I originally was given a K5 as wedding gift and had quite a few years of good use out of it. Then during a house move - somehow the lifting mechanism got broken and so it got left in a box in the loft for 5 years. Finally i got around to trying to get a repair and found I could send it to KitchenAid in the UK for £55 including collection and redelivery (it's very heavy) but not including any new parts that might be needed. Anyway, the collection was a breeze and I was told to expect to have my machine repaired and returned in around 3 weeks. Well 3 weeks passed and no news, so I chased. I was told the machine had been received and that they'd get the report to me soon of what was broken. Nothing for 2 weeks. So I chased. Same story. So I chased again and again, Finally after some 8 weeks I was told that the part was being sourced from the US - hence the delay. So I finally got stroppy with them and said this wasn't what I expected from KitchenAid. I was given a written apology and that they would send me a new machine and a gift.Well this time they came through. Some 10 years after the original one was purchased - they sent me a brand new machine for no charge. No sign of any gift as promised, but I'm very happy now that I am re-united and can expect many years of service from this one. So customer service and communication issues aside - they are a good company with a great product and when they get it wrong they put it right in the end, which is better than 95% of the companies out there. Will definitely keep buying Kitchen Aid for years to come.
