4Good product - does what it is supposed to
By Steve Longden
The way this works is that you plug it into the back of your server or whatever, and then from some other computer you can control your server just as if you were sat at it. Your own keyboard, monitor, and mouse work just as if they were plugged into the server, but from a distance. And that distance can be any two end-points that are internet-connected - other side of the world if you like.Windows users enjoy the benefit of Remote Desktop, and others have VNC and other software-based remote support software, which does all that you need for controlling your server remotely for 99% of the time, without needing this box. But for that 1% where you can't do it with Remote Desktop, this little box saves the day. Situations where Remote Desktop won't do include anything that needs to run when Windows isn't - like BIOS updates, bare-metal installs, and if your Remote Desktop is broken (as famously happens when you apply SP1 to Windows 2008 Server R2 - nice one Microsoft - see the 'known issues' section of KB2667402).Connections are:* Plug the supplied long lead into the StarTech. The other end of it has a VGA connector and one USB plug to go into the back of your server. The one USB plug does for the signals from the StarTech for keyboard, mouse, and remote drive (you can have some storage device on your local computer and have it come up looking like a USB drive on the far-end computer).* Optionally plug the supplied short lead into the StarTech. The other end of this has VGA plug and two USB sockets, for your monitor, keyboard, and mouse. This is for 'loop through' of local keyboard, monitor, and mouse sited at the server end, if you want. If you are running the server 'headless', you don't need this.* Plug your network cable into the network socket of the StarTech. By default its web interface is on 192.168.0.60, but you can configure it for anything else, including getting IP from DHCP.Then use your browser on your local computer to connect to the web interface of the StarTech over the network/internet. From the StarTech's web interface you can download a Windows client (no installation required - just run the exe file you downloaded) which brings up a window at your end showing what is happening at the far end, and connects your local mouse and keyboard to operate the far end. Tip here is to make sure that the Windows 'enhance pointer precision' option is OFF for both the client and the remote end, otherwise the pointers and the near and far ends may not align. There is also a Java-based client downloadable from the web interface of the StarTech, which does much the same thing as the Windows-based client, but is platform-independent.And there you are - remote control of your server at a level below the OS, from anywhere in the world.I found StarTech support to be great. I had a problem which turned out to be server hardware (server VGA output socket intermittent when wiggled) rather than the StarTech, but they were great in helping diagnose it quickly.Only criticisms really are that the documentation isn't brilliant (but most of what you need to know is as written above), and that the web interface is - well - clunky. Often with these sorts of things you get either intuitive or pretty, but the StarTech web GUI manages to be neither. Loses a star for that. But after a bit of trial and error, you get the hang of it and it does what you want.Good product. I've not found anything to beat it at the price.
