I have used my Sandisk 16GB stick for about two weeks writing & reading approx 11GB each time with Windows XP and feel the speeds stated are about right. It lives up to my expectations, it is very robust and light..U3Personally I have little use for the U3 software at the moment; I have read reviews elsewhere regarding the U3 Autorun being inconvenient, suggesting that it can be removed. Yes it can if required but why would you want to, from the Sandisk menu it is simple just to enable or disable Autorun then use it as a normal memory stick.I have also read negative reviews regarding problems when inserting the memory stick into a USB port because of its capless slider design, it did take me a couple of goes before getting the hang of it, but it really is an excellent design.

I purchased the 16Gb Cruzer on the strength of the manufacturer's reputation (Sandisk), the high storage capacity (16Gb), the superbly strong titanium casing and the retractable USB connector. The low price was a bonus.Performance-wise this flash memory has three features that ought to be brought to the attention of prospective purchasers.Firstly and secondly, the Cruzer is equipped with a bright amber activity LED that slowly fades between off and on when the flash memory is not in use. The rate of LED flashing speeds up when the flash memory is being accessed. The inactive state is referred to as 'breathing'. The active state can be likened to someone engaged in vigorous exercise, they breath faster.This was the first flash memory I have purchased with an amber LED. I have no problem with this colour but I would have preferred a subdued blue LED. I am also more used to a status LED that flashes when memory is being accessed and is either off or on when memory access is inactive. However, I became quickly accustomed to the 'breathing' and 'faster breathing' to indicate the different states.Thirdly, and most importantly, the write access speed is, at times, incredibly slow, so slow that writing appears to stall for what feels like a minute or two as if the Cruzer is taking a breather(!). Read access is better but in my opinion still much slower than the specified 15MB/s. Write speed is 9MB/s but feels very much slower.I have encountered very slow flash memory before but never in the lower storage capacities, e.g. 8Gb and below. The low capacity Cruzers are no exception. To prove a point I purchased the Cruzer Ultra Titanium 8 and 4Gb flash memories and speed tested them. Both these low capacity Cruzers were very much faster than the 16Gb version and I felt they were performing at their specified speeds. Why then is the 16Gb version so absurdly slow at times? Is it a function of the formating which is FAT32? Would NTFS prove faster? Is it the 16Gb implementation, i.e. large memory access is inherently slower? I do not think so. I have a 16Gb Corsair Voyager that is incredibly fast. Why is the 16Gb Cruzer very slow?I use an Apple MacBook Pro (OS X), a Dell M65 (Windows XP) and a Netbook (Linux) and the Sandisk Cruzer range of flash memories is compatible with all three operating systems as a mass storage device. However, Windows users have one distinct advantage - U3 Smart is installed.'U3 Smart' means Windows users can carry their applications (U3 compatible) and data from one PC to another PC, possibly one not belonging to the Cruzer owner. All subsequent data, file & folder amendments are retained within the Cruzer so that when it is plugged into the original PC the files, folders and data are automatically resynchronized between Cruzer and PC. This makes the Cruzer ideal for Windows users who need to take their work with them, e.g., between home and office. Please note - U3 Smart does not work on OS X or Linux-based systems but the Cruzer is still mass storage compatible (MSC) on these systems, i.e., it can be used like and other USB mass storage device.In summary, the 4 and 8Gb Cruzers represent excellent value for money and their performance is well up to specification. The 16Gb Cruzer is also good value but its performance is well below that expected. There maybe a workaround that will speed up its performance but I have not yet found it. If you are in no hurry to copy information between computer and Cruzer then it is still a worthwhile purchase.
