5Great For Both Kids & Big Kids Too

How do you go about rating something you have bought several times over? Before this seems to make no sense at all,I must explain that this isn't the first of Hornby's 9F models I have owned.I actually own 4 if you include the green Evening Star(my first in fact),but after the 92220 model, came this inevitable follow-up.Numbered 92221(the actual 92221 loco was cut up in Blyth,Northumberland by Hughes Bolcklows in the late 60s),it has the same tooling origins from their Evening Star & subsequently the TTTE character "Murdoch",released in 2011 just before Christmas.....Based on a model from a few years back, the nice touches like separate handrailing, ladders etc make it a worthwhile inclusion to a collection or as a stand-alone effort for a youngster's ever-building trainset.I have one as 92221 with a fictitious name(Northern Star plates in the Evening Star font) as well as one completely renumbered as 92203 Black Prince + 92220 & a Murdoch.I did sell another one on I'd re-bodied as 92099,but without the accurate BR1C tender.Overall, when compared to a Bachmann version(I have 92077-a superb model, but normally twice this asking price!),there are very subtle differences, but with plenty of weathering or details applied, there is no reason why a very fussy modeller couldn't include one on their layout somewhere.A good, heavy loco easily capable of pulling a massive load of trucks(could shift 20 plank wagons with ease)& if used as a donor with the identity kit,a capable Black Prince alike which would look more than authentic hauling a nice rake of maroon or cream/crimson Mk1s.As it would happen,I see 92203 regularly on our local preserved line in North Norfolk as it is on long-term loan & David Shepherd's loco isn't available in RTR form, like the NYM Railway's Cock O'The North will be from Hornby soon. This model provides a great opportunity to own a Black Prince of your own, with a mere 45-60 min simple alteration using an identity pack(not included) you can find online.I have done two very recently, one for a friend & the other for my son(hence the review here) to own his favourite loco when Dec 25th comes(it's already finished & hidden away!).All in all,the model is a good performer for the money & provides a good opportunity for experienced modellers too.If you haven't had a 9F loco before, then you could do worse than this,as although it's classed as a "budget" effort, like the A4 & blue Class 40 diesel, they offer much more scope.A nice loco overall & about the 5th one I've purchased so far.......
