4great tripod, amazing for the weight
By chris
collapses and extends super quick, really light, just a shame that it doesn't come with a carry bag when vastly cheaper tripods do, and manfrotto have the gall to charge through the nose for one when you've already paid them out a fair whack of cash! Apart from that, fantastic! Make sure if lightness is really what you want that you get a light head as well.

5Tripod compromise
By Bernard Doughty
I spent quite a bit of time researching various tripods before buying my Manfrotto 055CXPRO4. On the one hand I was looking for something sturdy that wouldn't move that would go up to my height, I'm 6", and on the other something light enough to take on walks in the country and over the mountains. I was most impressed by the Giotto MTL9361B tripod, it was rock steady and the action of the folding down center column seemed strong and a great feature but it was just too heavy, especially when a head still needed to be added. I also looked at the carbon fiber version, but weight was still against me. In the end I opted for the Manfrotto. The tripod is really quite light, folds down to fit in a suit case when needed, and is still sturdy, although not quite as much as the Giotto. The center column can be withdrawn and then slid back in a horizontal position. At first, when you loosen the adjusting screw, the whole setup seems a bit flimsy but having used it on a number of occasions, like while trying to photograph from the further inmost point of a cave with the legs spread out near the ground and the horizontal arm holding the camera nearly against the back cave wall, it performed perfectly. There was no looseness once everything had been tightened up.As my title says, buying a tripod is a bit of a compromise. If I could afford it, it would be nice to own two, one like the Giotto MTL9361B which is strong and relatively heavy, that I would not have to use too far away from the car or studio and one like my Manfrotto 055CXPRO4 for trailing about the countryside.I also bought the Manfrotto MBAG70N Tripod Bag to help protect the 055CXPRO4, which comes with a shoulder strap. It seems well made and has enough room to spare to house the tripod with a Giotto HM5001 head attached. The red piping makes it look discreetly smart.Although I am reviewing my Manfrotto tripod, it would not be complete without mentioning the head that I'm using. As I decided to buy a light weight tripod, it seemed logical to also buy a light weight head. I had tried in a local shop a Manfrotto 488 ball head that really held my Nikon D80 with a 70-200 f2.8 lens steady, and a Manfrotto 808 three way head that was also very good, but I felt they were too heavy to trail about the country with. So, after having spent a lot of time reading the amazon reviews, I decided to buy a Giotto MH1302 ball head, as it had good reviews and was less than half the weight of the aforementioned Manfrotto heads. It's very difficult to judge the sizes of items like heads by their photos on web pages and when I received the Giotto, I immediately felt it looked too small for my needs. Nevertheless, I have been using it these last few weeks and have found it fine to hold my camera in either horizontal of vertical positions with a standard 18-135 kit lens. It is not as sturdy as the 488 but where it really let me down was when using it with my 70-300 VR 4.5-5.6 zoom lens. It just does not have the strength to stop the camera and lens from sagging from it's initial position, which is infuriating and what I didn't want. On reflection, if I had had the opportunity to view and handle one before ordering, I'm sure I would have bought a larger head, albeit a heavier one. As mentioned earlier, I now have a Giotto HM5001 three way head which is much stronger but not excessively heavy, and will keep me going until I have time to tryout firsthand another ball head.

5Brilliant Tripod
By Tim
It's expensive, but in this case you get what you pay for - an outstanding product. I've combined it with a Manfrotto 324RC2 ball head and could not be happier. If you are a serious photographer, this is the one to get. Lightweight, sturdy and easy to use.
