I bought this lens for my crop-frame Alpha 230 DSLR and the focal length of the lens works well on that size; it is a good length for portraits as well as giving a bit more working space for macro pictures. Sony's own macro lenses are 50mm and 100mm which aren't so convenient for both double macro and portrait pictures, so I went for this one.Pictures from the lens are really very sharp and I can't see any sort of distortion. It definitely outperform my camera's sensor, although I'm still learning the tricks of the macro world. The lens goes down to f/2 for portraits although that's not so useful for macro shots.The in-lens motor autofocus works really well; quick and quiet, with not too much hunting (although there is no focus limiter like the longer Tamron 90mm lens). You can override the focus manually at any time without flicking a switch. Plus it's light to carry. I have found that the autofocus does run down my camera battery faster than my other lenses, though, so I carry a spare round with me.All round I'm very pleased, and just need to go out and practice now!
