5Lovely bit of kit

This review is actually for the LE40A686M which is 50,000:1 and has 4 HDMI ports, so a slightly different model. Was toying with the idea for some time whether or not to upgrade my 2 year old Samsung 40" 1080i 15,000:1, but couldn't justify the extra. When this came down in cost and I had a buyer for the old TV, decided to just go for it now many of the blu-ray discs are 1080p. Firstly the good points... the picture is superb, watched a few blu-rays and the picture is crystal clear, clear edges, no colour blend and no pixelation what so ever. As usual the auto-setup was just 2 clicks and leave it to get on with it. Bad points are that the design for me is not quite as nice as some of the other models, it's all very square, the crystal edge does nothing for me. Then the remote... it's extremely big, chunky and ugly. Finally the default settings need to be adjusted, the standard picture is just too bright and colourful and the standard sound setting were a little tinny, however after a quick read of the manual and a little time, picture was great. These small issues however are offset by the specifications for this price, much cheaper than the equivalent spec Sony, so still 5 stars overall.

5Samsung LE 40A686 full HD LCD tv
By Y. A. J. Mamoojee
I spent an exceptionally long time researching options before deciding to buy this as a Christmas present for my Dad, who had become accustomed to the preformance of a top range Sony CRT TV that I had given him until it sadly expired.I'm not a fan of LCD tv, as my preferences have always been for Panasonic or Pioneer plasmas, as I prefer the vibrancy of colour and reliability - in fact there is a 23 year old Panny of mine still knocking around that I've given to a friend. However, Panasonic's styling lately has become a bit too fussy and over designed and even though this purchase wasn't being made for me, I'm a bit freaky like that anyway.I found the Samsung entirely by accident, walked past one on display and was instantly attracted to the simple clean lines, coupled with a picture that seemed way too good to for an LCD. We've a big Samsung fridge freezer that has never failed to impress so I thought more about the manufacturer, read more reviews then went back for a second look. The retailer in question was one of a big chain, and even when I explained that I didn't need the 'free' Blu Ray player that came with it, the bod was completely inflexible on price, so I tried good old trusty Amazon. The TV was ordered online and delivered within a couple of days by a really helpful courier; the whole process really couldn't have been simpler.I let myself into Dad's flat having lured him over to my home for an evening, having sneaked out on the pretext of a work situation that had cropped up. Even getting the box up two flight of stairs wth the help of a trusted friend was pretty straightforward, and this tv weighed nothing like what I'd been expecting. The setup was as easy as pie and the picture impressive both on Digital broadcasts, terrrestrial and Sky too. There is a built in signal booster which helps if the picture source is weak, too. I found myself reading the manual more as an afterthought in fact.A really neat feature is the remote control, use of which is simplicity itself - and it lights up in the dark, which I think is an added bonus that more manufacturers need to follow. There is more than enough connectivity in terms of HDMI and SCART sockets for most individuals and the clean cut design of this display should never really age.In spite of some reviews that I'd read that referred to weak sound from the built in speakers, in my view it's adequate. Sometimes consumers seem to have unrealistic expections in terms of what a manufacturer can cram into a tight space without compromise. If you need big sound and want to rock the house down, then invest in a discrete surround sound set up as I've done.In summary, top design, easy set-up, excellent value for money, easily rivalling my old favourite manufacturers too. What are you waiting for, go and buy one!
