New model from Canon bought because I was disappointed with the built in flash on the EOS400D.It is smaller than expected but you cannot fault the performance.Skin tones are more lifelike and not washed out,its performance for its size I think is exceptional.The bonus is found in its design-the head pulls forward to give you greater distance and it also tilts for bouncing off ceilings.I cannot recommended this highly enough-go buy!

I bought the 270EX as a pocketable device for use as a fill-in with my 5D Mk II (which has no built-in flash) and G10 compact (which does but it's close to the lens axis). In that respect it's perfect: it's actually smaller than I thought it would be and easily fits into a coat pocket or one of those small accessory pockets on a rucksack.There are no controls on the device so everything has to be controlled through the camera menus but I actually prefer this to having to fiddle about separately with an LCD on the gun. I use it solely for fill-in for daylight portraits on the 5D and, with a short zoom (say 85mm), it's great. A longer zoom and further distance from the subject is pushing it but if all you want are catchlights in the eyes then it's no problem.On the G10 it improves on the built-in flash, largely because of the extra power, larger head giving slightly less harsh light and greater distance from the lens.Don't buy this expecting the performance of the bigger flashguns in Canon's range; its benefits are the portability and, compared to built-in flash, zoom and bounce facilities.

I purchased this flash because of its compact size, it is easier to carry around and looks less intrusive on the camera but still manages to give much better results then my EOS 450D built in flash. It seems ideal for my occasional use, and despite its size it has plenty of features as found on the more expensive models. Probably if you use flash extensively, you would go for the larger and more expensive Speedlites, but I suspect for many people this will be an ideal choice, and of course it is cheaper.
