5Lacie 4Big RAID
By Malcolm
I purchased the 4Big Quadra after the failure of another RAID drive system from Lacie that went down rather unexpectedly after nearly 3 years of continuous use. Unfortunately I had been operating the array in RAID 0 so when one drive failed I lost all of the data. Based on this experience I decided I needed something more substantial with the option to restore a drive after failure i.e. more RAID options and more space. The new drive is an expensive piece of kit, but I feel it's worth it. Abiding by the maxim that if you buy quality, you only cry once. The drive array is surprisingly heavy for something that is about a 30cm square. It has a big blue LED button on the front, four trays for the actual drives at the rear as well as some connections, very minimalistic. The only issue I had with the set up was setting the RAID configuration. The Lacie 4Big Quadra is a hardware raid so you set the RAID configuration on the unit itself and not in software. You have to press two buttons on the back to set the configuration you want. I had trouble figuring out how to do this until I realised I needed a pen to push the actual buttons because they are recessed so that you cannot press the buttons accidentally. This isn't mentioned in the Quick Start Manual though.I connected the unit to my MacBook Pro as one of a set of drives on a Daisy Chain linked to my Firewire 800 port. The array was recognised immediately it was connected with Disk Utility reporting the correct amount of drive space available for the RAID option I'd chosen. I then had to partition and format the drive to be able to use it. Something that is very painless on a Mac System. In use the speed is not blazingly fast, but then the array is being used as a backup system not as data storage for day-to-day use. Copying 1-5Gb at a time only takes about 10mins as an incremental backup. What I have noticed is that their isn't any fan noise even though there are 4 SATA drives inside the unit which must be pumping out at least some heat when idle. According to the technical spec the unit is fitted with an intelligent fan system. Whatever is the control mechanism the cooling is very efficient and very inobtrusive. This is important to me because the drive is in my music studio. So noise would be a big issue. The only noise I have heard is an occasional mild thumping noise as the drives are written to under load (a lot of copying on multiple drives), but I can control this by repositioning the drive and it's not noticeable at all most of the time.I have one partition of my RAID array acting as a time capsule back up and another being used to clone my sample drive using the Carbon Copy software. So far there hasn't been any issue with this arrangement despite these backups sometimes occurring simultaneously.Overall I am very happy with my purchase.
