5Very well made, but make sure you understand the limitations of HDMI and S/SPDIF
By The Fat Monk
Compared with most HDMI connector / adapter boxes that you might need (splitters, switches, repeaters), this is the expensive one. The reason for this is that it actually has to do heavy signal processing to extract the audio - it's not just reclocking and amplifying the HDMI signal. You also get a quality piece of kit for your money, and other brands of box to do the same thing can set you back £600 or more. The build quality on this unit is very good (although the first unit I received has a broken door on the TOSLink connector - Keane retail replaced the unit immediately though, so good on them). It's a metal case with connectors that click solidly home. Before buying, though, make sure you know the limitation of your equipment and the signal standards in play here. I learned some new things in finding out that this unit couldn't do what I needed because of the limits of the S/PDIF digital audio interface.Using HDMI you can carry Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio from a suitable source. You can also carry the higher channel audio signals (7.1 etc). However S/PDIF is limited to regular DTS and Dolby and 5.1 channels. That is even DTS-HD Master Audio 3/2.1 (ie 5 channels + sub) cannot be carried on S/PDIF. (The AU-11SA unit does actually support these HD audio formats on its HDMI in/out ports - this is a limitation only of the S/PDIF audio interface). The upshot of this is that if your source device (BluRay player or whatever) is outputting DTS-HD Master Audio, for example, on the HDMI output then the audio out of the S/PDIF connector on this unit will be unusable. The saving feature is that the multi-channel decoded analogue out of this unit (on 4 x 3.5mm minijacks) is perfectly OK to feed into an amp with discrete inputs (line-level, so it will need to be an amp - not just speakers as it appears another reviewer here was trying to do).Remember that HDMI is a clever little interface and your source and display equipment talk to each other to determine what is the best signal type that both can handle. This means that you may well end up with your source outputting an audio signal that can't be de-embedded onto the output of the AU-11SA that you want.I spoke directly with CYP (thanks again to Keane retail putting me in touch) and we got to the bottom of the problems I was having pretty quickly. So after sales service from the manufacturer can be recommended as well.In summary, then, if HDMI de-embedding is what you need and you understand the limitations of the different signal formats then this is a great piece of kit. It comes with a 'wall wart' type power supply and amplifies the HDMI output enough to drive my cheap 15m cable without problems. There are no instructions included, but it's really pretty much plug and play - if you're buying this then you'll probably have an idea what you're doing anyway as it's not really an obvious box for the average home user to be looking for. It's certainly a lot cheaper than many of the alternatives, and does the job just as well in a well built package - just a shame that it wasn't quite the job I needed.

3A new world
By H. J. T. Kwant
HDMI is a new realm to me. The idea is to extract 5.1 audio from it and feed it into 3 stereo technics power amplifiers. However the audiolevel output is to low to feed it directly into the amplifiers. These levels are not given in the manual.I asked CYP but sofar no answer. The device works fine via the preamp on the two front speakers.
