This graphics calculator is really a small computer. Although the keys are too small for touch-typing, the qwerty keyboard allows an extremely large range of built-in functions to be entered with relative ease. If you don't remember the functions, the calculator provides menu access to the full list.This calculator can perform both numerical and symbolic calculations, with answers in a mathematically exact form, or numerically rounded if desired. It can evaluate and solve both algebraic and calculus problems. It can graph single or multiple functions simultaneously or individually, where you can choose the type of display format, e.g., line, dot, square, thick, ... to distinguish each function. You can also plot sequences, etc. You can zoom in and out of a graph, reset the range of coordinates, trace the cursor along the curve to read coordinates, calculate maxima and minima, etc.TI provides ongoing support for this system, and if recent history with the earlier TI-92 and TI-92 Plus predecessor systems is any indication, will continue to do so even when a replacement becomes available.The Voyage 200 approaches, in many of the most widely used areas, the capabilities of more expensive mathematical software packages available for the PC, e.g., Maple, Mathematica, etc. In areas of overlap, this TI is almost always easier to use, although in less common mathematical domains its capabilities are much more limited or non-existent.The system's leading position, and the lack of effective competitors is both an attribute and a handicap. The Voyage 200 derives directly from the TI-92, TI's first symbolic calculator, released in the mid-1990s, which was then updated a bit to the TI-92 Plus in 1998. The Voyage 200 is essentially a cosmetic update, with increased flash memory, of the TI-92 Plus. For example, its display is still 240×128 and still monochrome.Clearly this essentially decade old system would benefit from a serious refresh. Display improvements in PDAs, cell phones, and other palmtop devices show what's now available. For example, AMOLED screens could provide significantly improved resolution with lower power consumption, and the introduction of color would significantly help in the presentation of multiple plots, etc. One hopes that TI management and engineers have already taken a serious look and are soon to release an upgraded system that includes not only the appropriate hardware improvements available for the display, memory, and processor, but extensions in the range of mathematical functions available, as has occurred with competing mathematical software systems.TI graphing calculators developed with TI's acquisition of Derive mathematical software some years ago. However, when the company announced that as of June 29, 2007 they would no longer sell Derive, apparently development stopped in 2006, there was/is an open question as to what TI's interest and capability will be to move their graphing calculator software forward in the near future.However, it is hard to fault a system that "got it right" from the start, has an incredible range of mathematical capabilities, is programmable, and allows for internet updates to its operating system and the installation of new applications. In spite of its age, this is still a remarkable industry-leading system that is really a pleasure to use.
