I've had a regular stream of external disks, as I constantly keep upgrading to try and keep pace with my backup needs. This 500Gb model was to replace a full 160Gb Western Digital model.The thing that first strikes you about this drive is how smart it looks. It's highly reflective steel - I've yet to test it for the claimed resistance to scratching - something that my previous Western Digital (plastic) was pretty rubbish at.It also comes with a fairly smart faux leather case, something several others similar models in this category don't have.It is powered solely by the USB cable - a double-ended one is supplied, but I found (on my Macbook Pro at least) you only need to plug one in. Although it only works with the thick one - try plugging it in with just the thin one results in the drive not being detected. I'll probably swap the cable for a standard USB one.The only slight criticism is the amount of packaging it comes with - countless pieces of plastic and cardboard, plus two thick (several hundred pages, and thicker than the product itself!) manuals.However, the quality of finish and inclusion of a case, without a price premium over other 500gb models makes this, in my opinion, a winner.

This product delivers everything you would expect. The previous reviews cover pretty much all the details you need. The fact that you don't need an external power source is great. The stylish finish is lovely and the case supplied does a great job in protecting it.The one thing worth noting is that I have been unable to transfer files which are larger than 5gb in size. It just won't allow you to do it. I wanted to store large video files on here but was slightly disappointed that this is not possible. I don't know if this is the case with other HDD's. It might be worth investigating this further should you need to regularly transfer large files.All other aspects of this device are excellent. The drive is quiet in operation and transfers data at a reasonable speed.

I received my Toshiba steel hard drive and it fell apart (the metal casing split in two) as soon as I took it out of the box. I can only assume the build quality is poor, as the packaging looked in perfect condition. I would therefore not recommend this product on the grounds that it is poor quality build.
