I should start by stating that I'm very impressed by Maui-Jim as a company and I own 5 pairs of their sunglasses, purchased over a 10 year period.Today I received my Canoes and they're very good. The lens is the Maui-Evolution lens that aims to combine the best qualities of Maui-Jim's glass and plastic lenses (the optical quality of glass, the damage resistance and weight of plastic) into a single lens. This is my third pair of glasses with this lens (Paradise, Longboard, Canoes) and I think they've fully achieved their objective. All Maui-Jim lenses are polarised and the grey lenses that I favour (as in this item) offer the highest light filtration. Having said that I can wear my glasses indoors or in very low light and still see perfectly. I can also, as today, walk around in total comfort with the fierce sun very low in the sky.The Canoes are a great fit for my (fairly large) head and are comfortable. They have rubber nose pieces that work to stabilize the frames and even shaking my head in 3 dimensions won't shift them. The frames are gloss black and well made (as are all Maui-Jim frames) in Japan. I perhaps favour the smoke grey frames of my Longboards but these still look great! The coverage is ideal, the 8-base curve around my head gives a 'goggles' feel (but not look). Because the fit is so close there's very little light behind the lenses and therefore they do appear reflective from the front despite being grey, but I like that. Optically the lenses are exceptional, if you look at a medium lit scene with and without the glasses on you'll only notice a reduction in light and glare, everything else, colours included, will be the same. In strong light or glare the glasses will radically improve what you're seeing because of the polarisation of the lenses.I think for practical usage, and arguably for style, Maui-Jim make the world's finest sunglasses and if you buy any pair you won't be disappointed. Particularly with these Canoes.
